Harlow's Enterprise Zone (Enterprise West Essex @ Harlow) reaches a key milestone with the launch of the public consultation on the proposed Local Development Order for London Road North site. Read more here.

A new national state-of-the-art medical research centre is to be opened in Harlow. The Phenome centre will be the first of its kind in the world where researchers will be able to explore the characteristics of disease in order to develop new drugs and treatments for patients.

Based at the former Glaxosmithkline laboratories the Phenome Centre will be a public-private partnership with £10million state funding from the Medical Research Council and the Department of Health's National Institute for Health Research, with about £20million contributions in kind from two scientific instrument makers; Bruker and Waters Corporation, with Imperial College and King’s College London as university partners.

July 2012

The West Essex Alliance Board meeting takes place with Business Support and the provision of Boadband as key items on the agenda. The Board received a presentation from Essex County Council providing an update on the Essex Broadband Strategy and progress made to date.

A working group was established, which will report to the next Board meeting to recommend business support measures that will benefit West Essex business.


June 2012

Harlow Council represents the West Essex Alliance at the 4th annual Harlow Business Exhibition at the Manor of Groves Hotel. The exhibition had representatives from 100 local firms and saw 700 visitors throughout the day.


May 2012

Following a submission to Anglia Ruskin University in November 2012, at the official launch of the Anglia Ruskin MedTech Campus, Harlow is announced as one of the locations for one of the world's largest health innovation spaces.

The project, which is a partnership between Chelmsford City Council, Harlow District Council, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and Anglia Ruskin University, is predicted to grow the UK medical technology sector by £1.2bn and generate approximately 12,500 jobs. Read more here.


March 2012

The Road Infrastructure Improvements application is approved by SELEP and will see a £3.5m investment into the road infrastructure on the A414 to provide access to the Enterprise Zone, London Road and Templefields sites as well as improvements to Edinburgh Way. Read more here.

The West Essex Alliance Board meeting took place and saw the appointment of Nick Barton, Managing Director, London Stansted Airport as Chair of the West Essex Alliance. Will Parkes, Communications Director, London Stansted Airport was also appointed as Vice-Chair and will support Nick in his role as Chair.

MedTech Symposium held bringing together a range of sector experts to advise on the development of Enterprise West Essex @ Harlow.

The third meeting of the West Essex Alliance took place. John Spence steps down as Chair following his appointment as Chairman for SELEP. Vice-Chair to become Acting-Chair until a formal appointment is made.

The second meeting of the West Essex Alliance took place and it was agreed that a bid for Enterprise Zone status would be submitted to SELEP.
